All cervical conditions are asymptomatic and completely silent, including cervical cancer. That is why regular pap smears are essential, to ensure you do not miss the first signs. It is difficult to monitor a condition that offers no alarm signals.
Approximately 30% of my patients have never had a pap smear. 40% of my patients don’t remember the last time they had one. It is a painless process and along with a pap smear we highly encourage women to check for HPV, the leading cause of cervical cancer.
I had a patient come in for a regular check-up, trying but struggling to get pregnant for 7 months. She already had 2 children.
When planning a pregnancy we highly encourage patients to do a pap smear, check for HPV, chlamydia and genital herpes. Following the pap smear, we found changes consistent with a precancerous condition, also known as cervical dysplasia.
The patient was referred for a biopsy, which confirmed cervical cancer.
She underwent surgery and chemotherapy.
She has been cancer free for 2 years on, and every Easter the family comes by the clinic to thank us for spotting it in time. Since Easter is coming, I hope to see them soon.
